I have a situation where I have probably about 100 switches that need replacing. Money is tight, we have a fibre back bone but will be building a new site in 3 to 4 years with latest technology. Therefore I either buy cheap now to run for 3 to 4 years and then buy medium or buy high now and hope to get 5 to 8 years out.

The questions are:

1) Do I go Layer 2 or 3? I know the difference and we only run a single IP range (though there is scope to run two but with a trust structure) and so I don't see the advantage of 3 over 2 but maybe someone will convince me otherwise.

2) Do I go 1 gig or 10 gig? And if I go 10 gig which switches can truly run at this rate?
