Switches... Managed... Unmanaged

What is the difference... I mean when you get a managed switch what exactly are you manageing i guess is the question.

A managed switch has the ability for you to assign an IP address to the device and configure/monitor it by a built in web interface or SNMP or both.
A good "manageable" switch is abled to be polled and monitored by a remote SNMP management station. They also will give detailed statistics on each port.
i.e. packets in
packets out
errors in
errors out

I'm not aware of any "low cost/ home switches/routers" that have that ability at this time. They pretty much all web/telnet enabled.
