probably a crazy question, but is there a heck of a lot of difference between major brands of network switches? brand loyalty and personal preferences aside, is there a good summary out there that compares hp, 3com, cisco, nortel, etc.?

At certain points in time, one vendor may have a product that is better than the competitors', at least until the competitors catch up. For example, the ProCurve 5300 family's Tolly test results (see:

show that this device smokes the competition, performance-wise.
