I wish to use a (slave) drive for a total back-up. Since I will perform this task once a week for five minutes, there is no need to have the drive spinning the rest of the week. I would like to switch all power except ground.

Is my computer gonna be happy with this?

Sure, just tell Windows to power down the hard dirves after a time limit. It is not unpowered just powered down. If you are saying that you are going to literally switch off the power than maybe windows will have a problem. I don't think that is necessary.
Have you thought about one of those new Maxtor External hard drives? They are specifically designed for this purpose and you could unplug this when not in use since it uses USB (2.0).

Expanding on to your idea I believe you can get external hard drive USB caddy's now that do pretty much the same thing but cheaper.
