I run a small network of 30 machines from 1 server.

We are upgrading the server which will have a Gigbait netowrk card.

We are also upgrading the Switch (currerntly 2 24port 10/100 unmanaged switch).

Which is more important:
1. Managed v unmanaged - is this relevant to a small network?
2. 48 port 10/100 + 2 port 1000 or 48 port 10/100/1000 and upgrade all desktops.

I am leaning towards unmanaged 48 port 10/100/1000 and upgrade desktops.

In your situation, gigbit to the desktop is unnecessary.

I would go with a managed 48-port 10/100 + 2 gig ports.

I like dearingkr's reply, my only objection would be if you get the 48prt 10/100/1000, you leave room for expansion with the desktops. Of course, if the desktops are old and not going to be upgraded but replaced anyway, then the new ones will most likely have gigabit NICs anywho and you will still be better off with the switch.
