Hi all,

I had a question regarding a good design for a server farm. I have some juniper firewalls that I want to place before the TOR switches. These are juniper isg1000 currently only fitted with 1gb nic. There are 2 fw for redundancy. My TOR switches are all 10gb interfaces (about 10 interfaces) and i have 2 switches. SO i decided to stack them so that I can do away with SPT. This is the first time trying to work on my server farm. So the problem I have is this. What considerations should I take when connecting my TOR sw to the firewalls? If my servers and tor switches are all 10gb connections and my firewalls with only 1gb, do I have to upgrade my firewalls to 10gb int as to not cause a bottle neck? Ive attached a picture for better clarification.

Is there a better design you would recommend in this regards?

Thank you

So you only have 1Gb/s maximum throughput, with the bottleneck being the ISG1000s.

To improve your throughput, you remove the bottleneck.

In other words, you need a firewall that has 10Gb/s interfaces and a throughput of 20Gb/s or more.

Thanks. From what I understand, this fw can have 2 10gb lan int ports. Is this the same as saying it will have 20gb throughput?

No, the speed of the interfaces has nothing whatsoever to do with the firewall's throughput.

I well recall the old Cisco PIXs and being handed some 1Gb/s interfaces once and was asked, "to upgrade it to 1Gb".

Boy, were they disappointed when I told them their firewall only had about 100Mb/s throughput and the 1Gb/s interfaces would serve no purpose.....

You will also want to consider in your design whether multiple 10Gb interfaces on the firewall can be trunked together, or whether they can only be used in an active/standby configuration.

With two firewalls, most firewalls can be clustered, but not virtual-chassis-ed together, so will end up wasting half your 10Gb/s interfaces.

Yes...imagine my dismay when I first found out throughput on fa0/0 on a 2620...
