I have two pc's in one end of the room and the network nodes for these pc's are at the other end. I have made two long cables which go over the ceiling and into the nodes. This works fine (the nodes go to a hub in another room). I have bought an cheap switch which i wanted to use for connecting any new pc's which may be purchased later. I tried to connect the cable from one of the computers to the switch and then a cable from the switch to the node. For some reason the connection goes on and off. When pinging only some of the packets are sent and recieved. I then tried to put the cable from the computer side in the switch and then a cable from the computer to the switch. It worked without a problem. But i thought that the cabling should have worked both ways?

Any ideas?

Straight through cables go from Network gear to computers.

To go from computer to computer or network gear to network grear, you need cross over cables

the leg from the central hub to the cheap switch will need a cross over cable in it somewhere (or use an uplink port)

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
