Swirling smokle of the universe....

having real problems here, i think its more a case of jumping from version 5 of photoshop to 7 and not knowing where things are. I am trying to do a blue swirling smoke effect at the bottom of this picture



In 5 i would of done some wavey lines, then use the dodge tool to pick up the highlights, and then used the wave effect. but this doesnt seem to work in 7. can anyone throw any tips ?

I have photoshop cs but i think you will have this. Put the area on one layer you want swirling smoke effect on, blue brush stroke possibly, then choose filter>Distort>twirl. , spherize could work too, but i think you may have more control with twirl.

Then add a little gaussian blur to "wisp" your edges.

Wow JT that almost looked like you knew what you were doing!
