I have a small win2k domain with 2 DCs. I am about to do a swing migration to introduce an SBS 2003 server where I've read up on the appropriate MS KB ( Couple of questions:

1. It says to run adprep and forestprep on the existing DCs. I can't find it on my win2k servers but I see in previous threads, reference to Disk 2 of the SBS installation disks...is this OK to run on the Win2k boxes? Sorry if that's a silly question, just want to be sure!

2. Is the following sequence of events correct:
a) Run adprep /forestprep on the schema master
b) Run adprep /domainprep on the infrastructure master

3. All the FSMO roles are currently held by one of the win2k DCs. Do I take it I perform the above (point 2) only on the one server then?

Thanks

Dan

Yes, you would be correct that adprep /forestprep and /domainprep will be run from your one server.

There have been problems with different versions of adprep in the past, such as is outlined in this article:

But, at the bottom it says that this problem is fixed if you use the most recent version, and Microsoft says, "We recommend that you always use the latest version of Adprep.exe to extend the schema.

Thank you, that's made it a lot clearer! Dan

Hi,

Couple more questions regarding this.

1. The KB article says to run adprep/forestprep first.

As I am taking a staged approach I was wondering what happens if I leave the adprep till later OR run it now but leave it sometime before I perform the swing migration? Does running adprep have any immediate and potentially adverse affect on my domain?

I was hoping to get the box up and running, add extra licenses etc before I do anything else.

2. Step 8 of the KB says "After the new computer is successfully promoted to a global catalog server, remove any other catalog servers in the domain".

Now I know SBS has to hold all the FSMO roles but I thought you could have other global catalogs in the domain...does that mean only one global catalog can now exist and also, what happens if the SBS server goes down and users want to log on?

Thanks

Dan
