Hello Office Guru's

I don't make it this way much, but I have an MS Word problem. I need to get the word SWENG into the header of my word document. I can put it in there, save it, and everything looks fine (even if I close or reopen). But, when I print (or go to print preview), SWENG is turned to SWING?

The only thing I have tried so far is typing SWENG in the document body and running spell check (hoping it would let me add it to the dictionary). Of course, I do not get any error on SWENG when typed in the body.

A co-worker of mine was doing some work for an ISP that we do business with, and he said that the acronym HSI was constantly changed to HIS when placed in headers. So I am thinking this is some kind of auto-correct thing?

I very rarely use Word, and I have never run into this problem. Is it some setting that I need to enable/disable? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

Hi,

Thanks Skip, but no dice. It changes right back to SWING when I print/print preview. Its' got to be some kind of auto-correction happening, I just don't know what it is. But its' making me long for MS Works :-(

Interestingly, it does not seem to recognize that a change has been made. Does not prompt me to save, and then its' back to SWENG when I re-open. Curious...

Reckon you have it right.
Tools, Autocorrect (in Word2003) Otherwise look it up in help.

Hey guys, it turns out the document's original creator had assigned some sort of auto-text field (I did not even know such a thing existed!) that contained the spelling error. So I could change the value till the cows come home, but unless I completely deleted the text that was coming from this auto-text field, then it would revert when printed.

Very odd. Maybe I should just start typing everything in notepad so I don't get confused by all these gizmos.

Alex,

You can also add the word by going to your custom dictionary

Tools>Options>Spelling & Grammer>Customer Dictionary

Hope that helps

Alex, it never occurred to me autotext entries were be saved with a document. I wonder why it only updates when you print - really naff!

Help led me to Insert, Field, Links and References
- my betting is you have Tools, Options, Print, Update Fields ticked?

But it doesn't update as you type because of your settings on Insert, AutoText, AutoText - perhaps the "Show AutoComplete suggestions" check box?

I try to avoid printing documents that I am reviewing but have been caught out a few times with total formulae in tables. Someone can edit the result - not realising it is a field. Looks ok until someone updates the field - then a mess. The issue you have uncovered sounds worse - the document I clear may not be the one that the intended recipient reads.

Very interested if you find out any more.

There's also an option to mark some text as 'Do Not Check Spelling or Grammer'. In Word 2002, that's found via Tools > Language > Set Language, but you need to have the text selected first.
