swatches making problems

Please advise me - could't find anything in books or"help".
Trying to give different color outline to EXISTING swatch for pattern, dragged it from the palette, make a copy, added the stroke, put under previous one and - CAN't "define pattern"-error message"can't define a new pattern from the selectio", also can't drag into swatch palette.The same problems when trying to save a swatch from other AI documents - but not made in AI.What I don't know?

There are certain thing that cannot be included in swatch patterns. Such as blends, gradients, effects, complex appearances, pretty much anything that has to be rendered on screen. Ungroup everything you plan to make a swatch, select and inspect each object and then hide it. Repeat til all the objects are hidden then show all and try again. BEHOLD! I will try to check all parts of swatch, but my problem is another kind of:
-In the existing artwork I need some new pattern:
-open some swatches form Other Libraries, drag one onto clipboard, colorize it and:
-I CAN NOT save it in the swatches palette to use in artwork which needs it.
-even I make separate layer for this swatch creating and lock all other - I stil got same error message "can't define new pattern from selection.Can't also drag it into Swatches palette.
-from other hand - i can modify and save existing swatch in the New,BLANK document.
can you help me?
I will it appreciate it very much.
