What is the best way to see if I am really optimizing my swap space. When ever I give the SAR cmmand I get back reclaimed pages of memory is 0.0 and the average swap out transfer request rate is also 0.0. I really need to know the reason behind my system slow down and have run out of ideas. Thanks (I am currently running swap space at about 1.5 times my physical memory)

Hello !

I'm not sure this really will help you but on the Skunkware cd, there is a script-collection. The name is "John D maintenace script" if i recall the name right. Anyhow one of the scripts shows the memory usage on a slight better way than you get with "swap -l", there are also a bunch of other nice scripts to check up your system.

if your system is slow and swap is not in use
then it could be the some process taking too much of the
cpu -- find the culprit progra by this command
"ps -ef -otty -opcpu -oargs"
and look for pcpu column for top processes in agrs column
and remember to ignore cpu idle process in agrs column

Do you have the command 'top' on your system? That will give you an easy to read and self explanattory display of the processes running on your system.
