I have 2 Proliant 5500 servers. On is a quad P-Pro 200 (E39) with the old-style drive cage (uses card-edge adapters). I also have a dual P3 Xeon (P12) with the new-style drive cage.

Unfortunately, I cannot mount my 1.6" 50gb drives in the new cage because of their height. I was going to swap the cages but realized that the new cage as 3 cooling fans attached to it. I don't see any way to move that fan assembly to the old cage.

Are those fans use for cooling the drives or for cooling the chassis interior? If I swap cages, will I have heat issues or should the system run fine without them?
