Hi y'all--

I have a Merlin Legend R3... the hard drive is making a spastic noise. To me, it sounds as if the bearings are squealing and it's getting ready to lock up. It's the original drive... 10+ years old.

How easy is this to replace? Am I limited on size of hard drive? That is, does it need to be less than 2 gigs, or 1 gig, or whatever?

What steps are necessary to replace it? I can make a completely backup in WinSPM. Do I do that, replace the drive, and then backup? Do I use Norton Ghost and just copy the current drive to a new drive? Is the drive serialized in any way? How tricky is this?

I appreciate any help you have. I looked online for a while for a "guide" of sorts to do this, but couldn't find anything. I was only avaya.com and couldn't find it either, but I'm not the most patient man when it comes ot searching :)

Also, I have no service contract, or, I'd just call a tech and have it done for me.

So... anxiously awaiting an answer...

Merlin Legend's do not have hard drives in them. You may be reffering to the merlin mail perhaps? if so they have a hard drive but it is poprietary ( if spelled right) to the mail system, I beleive it's a brooktrout drive. in the later case it would have to be replaced and you would have to reprogram everything. the only other option is to replace the mail with a newer version, maybe messaging and upgrade your processor on the legend.

if you are hearing a noise from the system and you do not have voice mail it is possible the power supply is going or ready to crap on you.

Are you certain it's not the powersupply fan? If so, lot's cheaper to fix. TipHelp@charter.net

Yup the power supplies are usually the problem. The Senstron model SQH4204 is a perfect match. It works in the stand-alone merlin and partner mail. You can find them cheap on the web.
