I have a modular messaging release 2 that the motherboard is going bad (the dvd drive does not work even though the dvd has been swapped with another) it is an MSS-H 3400 version. i was wondering if it was possible to just swap the box and move the hard drives from the old server to the new one without causing much down time. i don't really want to mess with a 2.0 reprogramming. i was thinking that if i just swap the drives into a new box that it would just work. this is a production system with no good backup for a year now and 2100 mailbox on it.

DVD issues and very common on that system. Is Avaya telling you that the mother board is bad ? Or did you try one time to replace the DVD and that is what is making you think he mother board is bad?

I have never tried it but i think you will run into more issues by swapping the hard drives unless you have the same motherboard in the new system and that is highly unlikley to happen unless you have the last version of the S3400 MSS.

I would try to get a replacement DVD drive and try to get it working first.

Also this has help me in the past on this issue. (Below)

>Shutdown the MSS gracefully.
Remove the DVD-RW drive.
Start the MSS server without the DVD drive.
After the MSS completely starts up, shutdown
the MSS again.
Reinstall the DVD drive.Start the MSS server.
Mount the DVD drive from the command line -ia_mount.
Run a backup to see if it will recognize the drive correctly
