We have one particular application that we wish to inventory on each of our sms win 2k clients. Unfortunately, the Software inventory agent is not reporting the correct version of the executable file. I have the agent set to perform an inventory every 24 hours so it is being updated regularly, but it appears to be reporting the previous version of the exe file. This is odd, because I am using SMS to push these updates to them.

If I look at the exe file on each individual workstation I can see that the file is indeed the updated and correct version. But why isn't the SMS inventory reporting the correct version? Any ideas?

What does the log on the client say (sinv.log) - any errors in it ?
Also be sure to check that the SMS-client can report to the SQL-DB...

Hi Chris,

Thanks for you suggestions. I have checked the sinv32.log and it looks pretty good to me. It says that the Inventory schedule successfully updated and that the Inventory cycle info also successfully updated. The only error is:

ERROR: FindFirstFileW() Failed on \\?\C:\System Volume Information\*.*: Access is denied.~~ $$<Software Inventory Agent><Mon Feb 24 14:03:55.022 2003><thread=1212 (0x4BC)>
Skipped Directory: C:\WINNT\MS\SMS\clicomp\sinv\filecol $$<Software Inventory Agent><Mon Feb 24 14:04:51.782 2003><thread=1212 (0x4BC)>
Skipped Directory: Z:\Recycled $$<Software Inventory Agent><Mon Feb 24 14:06:52.376 2003><thread=1212 (0x4BC)>
Scan Completed !! $$<Software Inventory Agent><Mon Feb 24 14:06:52.454 2003><thread=1212 (0x4BC)>

But I don't know if this has anything to do with it.

Please explain how do I check that the SMS-client can report to the SQL-DB...??

These error-messages are sort of "normal" - I wouldn't care about them ;)

Take a look on the SMS\Inboxes\Sinv.Box dir and the subdirs on your SMS-Server - something wromg there ?
On your SQL-Server browse to your SMS-Database and take a look on the tables "computer_system_data" and "computer_system_hist".
There you should see the machine(s) causing troubles and the last scan-date of the client(s)....

Hope this helps you !
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I'll take a look at this the next time I am remoting in and let you know. But I'm not sure if I communicated this properly. I don't have any trouble clients really--since I performed my firt upgrade on the application, ALL my clients are reporting the incorrect product version. If that changes things on your end, please let me know.
Thanks, Joel

SMS inventories file headers for all file types you have configured for the site to inventory. SMS only retrieves the information in the file header. If this information in the file header is incorrect, or like some poorly written apps the file header doesn't follow proper conventions, then you'll get information you don't think is correct.

You can improve your inventory collection by using Extended Software Inventory for SMS. It allows you to target specific files and retrieve much more information than SMS provides. Here's the link:
