SVN on debian

I have setup CVS/Apache on a Debian server. Now, I want to setup up subversion. But looking at some guides, it looks like I have to install it with Apache.
Is there a way to just install subversion and access it on the subversion port and preferably through https?
Forgive my ignorance. I am familiar with Linux, but never used CVS or subversion though.
