I am running Win2k Professional, service pack 2 installed and according to windows update I am up to date with all the latest hot fixes.
but svchost.exe is using all my memory, to the point where it consumes all I have and starts on the swap.
It slowly keeps gaining in size and takes about 3 days online time to eat my 512mb of ram.
I have read there is a memory leak when using NT but I am patched with that.
I havn't installed anything new, appart from MSN messenger (I have uninstalled and still the same)
Virus scanned, and do so all the time.
And have even tried swapping RAM to make sure it wasn't a faulty DIMM.
Failing a format and reinstall of 2k has anyone heard of this and can help me?

Thanks in advance.

hi buddy,
untill and unless u fdisk ur disk and reinstall os it won't solve ur problem properly.
regards

But do you know what causes it?
it is a problem that has just surfaced?
This system that is having the problem is a server for a small (4 system) LAN and svchost is needed for that

hi buddy,
It seems u r angry due to my reply......right?

anyway!I was not joking!!

r u running LDAP on ur server?
this is supposed to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

By the way
The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry to construct a list of services that it needs to load. There can be multiple instances of Svchost.exe running at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This allows for better control and debugging.

Svchost.exe groups are identified in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost
Each value under this key represents a separate Svchost group and is displayed as a separate instance when you are viewing active processes. Each value is a REG_MULTI_SZ value and contains the services that run under that Svchost group. Each Svchost group can contain one or more service_names extracted from the following registry key, whose Parameters key contains a ServiceDLL value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ Service

To view the list of services that are running in Svchost:

On the Start menu, click Run , and type CMD
