Hi

I am having major problems trying to reinstall Win 2000 on my PC - I think it may have something to do with the Worm virus, but I am not sure.

I reformatted my hard drive completely & removed the boot sector. I created a new partition & reinstalled Win 2000. This boots up perfectly.

With nothing else on my PC besides a clean copy of Windows, I installed my modem drivers to enable me to do a Windows software update & get all the security patches etc.

The problem is that I dial in & start the Windows update. After about 10 minutes, a message pops up & says "svchost.exe generated errors ...." Windows stops upating itself.

I looked this error up in the net & it seemed to lead me to a patch for the Worm virus.
This patch only works with Service Pack 2. This leaves me in a "catch-22" because I can get the lastest service packs to install the patch. Any suggestions of how I go about updating Windows to SP4 so that I can install the patch without it crashing out?

I thought that if I installed a clean copy of Windows that I could not get the worm. Or is this svchost.exe error caused by something else?

Please help.

Thanks

So you were connected to the Web for 10 minutes before the problems started. Would think that your new machine got infected then (ie in those 10 minutes).

hi

I agree with your reply. Having said that, I when I logged on I went straight to the Win updates. I did not go onto any other websites. Can the worm spread in this way?

How do I prevent it then as I try updating? Firewall? Bear in mind I cannot install my antivirus at this stage because when I log on to the internet to install the virus definitions I get the SVCHOST error.

thanks

and after installing the Microsoft patch update your virus DAT files.
