I'm new to NEC PBXs. Please be gentle.

Just trying to figure out how many phones we have. Even if I could just get a count on the digital phones that would be incredibly helpful.

I have an NEC Univerge SV8500 phone system with 2 additional cabinets labeled NEAX 2400 IMS and NEAX 2400 IPX.

Would there be any way to find out how many ports have a phone connected to them?

We have both analog and digital, no IP.

I have a list of extensions in the system but no way of knowing whether there is actually something at the end of it.

For IP phones go to the command

IPAN

Select the IP Terminal tab
Check the All Equipment box
Click Get
Let it run

For analog sadly there is no way to know.

Recently I had to survey a large site with Hundreds of Analog phones. We found we could identify if a phone is connected to the pair using an analog volt meter. A digital one will not work. You have to remove the pairs (one at a time) at the MDF and test the station side with the Ohm meter. If a phone is present you will see a quick bounce on the needle returning to zero as the capacitors soak up the current. If there is nothing on it you will get no movement. If it is shorted the needle will move and stay as the resistance value.

For the digital my gut tells me you can't tell by looking in the system but I might be wrong.

What? You absolutely can get list of extension and cards off system. IP phones you need to get in the software but hardware? Just have to look.

Yes you can do a LLEN to list up all of the LENS but he wants to know if there is actually a phone connected to the port.
