A Solaris host functions as a mail relay, in between Internet and internal Exchange server. Sendmail version is v8.12. We need to perform maintenance work on the Exchange server, it will be up and down for awhile. How can I temporary suspend relaying in-bound email from Internet to Exchange Server, and keep all emails in mail queue until Exchange becomes stable.

Thanks in advance.
Warren

Sendmail will queue the mail automatically until the exchange server comes back up.

Thanks for the info. I did not post my question clear enough. I try to do is to totally suspend relaying any email to Exchange server until it completes its maintenance task. Exchange server goes up and down during its service period. Thanks.

You could change the relay address in sendmail's configuration, or disable the Exchange services during maintenance. If there's a router between them you could block SMTP to the Exchange server.

Any of these will make sendmail think Exchange is permanently down until you change it back.
