Greetings Gang,
I've installed SUSE 9.1 personal. No problems installing but I cannot seem to configure my internet connection correctly. Can someone walk me through this process.
I've created connections on systems running WIN XP, so I'm not a total doofus, or perhaps they're two indepented things.

I have IP addresses and DNS numbers etc but I just can't seem to put them in their correct fields, as no connection is established however if I log out of Linux and log into windows (being a dual boot system) I can browse the web just fine.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Well - much things to guess for us.
Which hardware do you use to access the internet?
Internal / external modem?
ISDN, DSL, Cable-modem?
A direct eth-connection?

'in their correct fields'. - Hm - sounds like a helpful setup-script like 'netconfig' or 'network-setup' ...

How do you know the numbers are entered in the wrong fields?
Isn't this a dial-in connection?

I should have been a little more specific.
We have a DSL connection for internet access.
From the DSL modem we then connect to a wireless gateway/router which then connects to the NIC or Enet Card in my PC. (We have 2 wireless wintel boxes in a remote part of the office)
I've configured my ethernet card to an extent however some of the fields confuse me. Such as the routing, destination, and the fact that there are two fields for gateways...
We don't use DHCP so I've turned that feature off under both windows and linux.
I've given the ethernet card the same IP under both windows and linux, that made logical sense.
As for routing, I'm not sure if this is where I'm making my mistake. I have all of the DNS, IP's Internal Gateway numbers, but I'm assuming they are not yet in the correct field.
Can someone help define these fields and possibly relay the windows equivilant?
For Example,
The Destination field on SuSE linux, is the same as your primary DNS on windows, use your primary DNS number here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Every distribution has it's own setup-routine and I don't use Suse.
They usually manipulate configuration-files in the background, so you can modify these directly too.

For the nameservers, your /etc/resolv.conf (should) contain(s) two lines:
Code:
nameserver 1.2.3.4
nameserver 1.2.3.200

For my ethernet-card setup, I call:
Code:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.3 up
, but don't know for wireless-cards.

To specify the gateway:
Code:
route add default gw 9.10.11.12

Then
Code:
ping www.tek-tips.com
When this work, we'll see how to make it permanent.

ifconfig
without an argument shows your current settings.
