hi all,
I've recently downloaded and burned to CD, SuSE 8.1 LiveEval. When I run LiveEval I recieve 4 or more "Illegal instructions". It then finishes loading and I can login as root. From there I can do some stuff, but I can't even "ls -al" or "startx"!!!! Most of the errors are perl errors, such as:
...
/sbin/init: line 345: 210 Illegal Instruction
perl -pi -e 's/^(SUSEWM_UPDATE=).*/$1\"no\"/'
/etc/sysconfig/windowmanager
...

Has anyone else recieved these problems? Or does anyone have a fix?

I dont mess with SuSE much, but do they provide a MD5sum for the CD image? My guess is it was corrupted on the ftp/http transfer.

I did a MD5sum on the image and it was the correct one so the download was fine. I'm really baffled on this one...

Try the cd on another computer.. If it does work, then you might have a heat problem. I had a comp with not enough silicon heat compound and it kept crashing at random places but at regular time intervals.

I guess it could also be a possibility that SuSE screwed up.

I've already tried the disc on another computer. I get the exact same errors at the exact same spot on different machines...hmmmm maybe I'll try burning the iso again...fun fun fun......

Have you tried re-installing perl? It could be that it is corrupt. John D. Saucier
