Hi, I've just downloaded the FTP version of Suse Linux 8.0 and everything went well as far as I can tell.

I rebooted the PC and after it had loaded everything I was faced with a command promt asking for login details.

I can login as root or one of the other user names is set-up during installation but how do I get to the GUI?

Edit the /etc/inittab file and change this line...

id:3:initdefault:

...to this...

id:5:initdefault:

Runlevel 3 is command prompt, and runlevel 5 is GUI login.

Thanks for your help Fluid, I did what you said and as I thought before, I had set it up in the installation to use the GUI and not just the text.

So I logged in as root then typed Edit the /etc/inittab and could see the setting was set to '5' so why am I unable to load the GUI?

In the installation it reported that the graphics are fine, it gave me good resolutions to work with etc, so it can't be hardware. Do I have to type something else, and if I do will I be able to load the GUI straight from reboot?

At the moment the Login screen I get is not like DOS, as it does have graphics also but no mouse support and only the prompt.

Thanks again Tezdread

"At the moment the Login screen I get is not like DOS, as it does have graphics also but no mouse support and only the prompt." --> oh, so you are booting into the GUI. What happens when you login?

I login as root and then I get this following line:

You have old mail in var/mail/root.
Last login ......
Have a lot of fun...
Linux:~#

I was under the impression from screen shots I have seen that the GUI would be more graphical, with a 'Start Menu' type form (not to disimilar to windows). So do I have to load something up? Tezdread

I'm not sure what your at. Try pressing 'Ctrl+Alt+Backspace'. See if that brings you to a command prompt. If it does, type startx to load the GUI.

when I typed startx at the prompt, the screen goes black for a second and then I see there is a reported error.

X10 fatal 10 error 104 (connection reset by peer) and a load of other info? Tezdread

I'm thinking that it might be the monitor settings that I specfied in the installation. For the monitor it was asking frequency etc, and I put 5 on both items.

I only have an old 15 inch monitor so what should I enter? Tezdread

If its not too late, try running "Xconfigurator". Use the default settings for the monitor and see if that works.

ChrisP

just running through the installation now, setup the monitor, Horizontal 60mhz x Vertical 60mhz, ran the Test and all looks good so far.

How do I get to the Xconfigurator? (total noob to linux) Tezdread

I've got it up and running, I'm sure it was the monitor settings that was screwing it up...

How would I get back to the text mode if I wanted to?

Do you know any good sites that have tutorials or other good information?

Thanks for you help with this Tezdread
