Can you make a windows 2003 SUS Server a client of itself by using this same technique you would to a small client network ?

Open your registry and find or create the key below.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]

Create a new DWORD value called "UseWUServer" and set it to "1" to use custom update servers or delete the value to use the default Internet site.

Then open the key

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]

and create two new string values called "WUServer" and "WUStatusServer", set these values to the names of the custom update servers (e.g. "
Restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

and if not , is there any other way this can be done ?

I think you canyeah. I'm working through the book for the 70-290 exam at the moment and have just done the chapter on SUS. I created a gpo on the default site which points all clients to the sus server rather than the internet for their updates.
The policy, when I checked the "Automatic Updates" screen in "System Properties" hasd been applied to the server as well as the clients.

If you're pointing all your clients at the sus box via a change to the registry perhaps you should consider doing it via GPO.

This answer your question?? if not, let me know

Hey Paul , thanks for your help.
Im also studying for the 70-290 myself. I could make GPO but its on a very small network with only 4 computers.
I just wondered if there was any easier way of maybe just adding or reconfiguring a few registry keys like you do on a client so the SUS server would point at itself for updates.
Once again thanks for your help

I'm assuming you can, but wouldn't know how, or at least not with the tools I have here!

If anyone else fancies letting us two newbies know ) we'd both be grateful

Under SUS i don't know , under WSUS definately, just add it to a user defined group.
