I have XP with all the latest service packs and I am trying to configure the automatic updates using gpedit.msc. we are not on active directory yet and I can't load the client because they say you have to be on Windows 2000 sp2 or XP. It's supposedly built in with the latest service packs. Well when I go into gpedit.msc the computer configuration - administrator templates - windows components - Windows update setting doesn't exist. it does under local user but it doesn't have the correct entries under Windows update to modify. Any suggestions? I have configured a SUS server and need to configure the clients to point to it. Seemed to be a simple task.

You have to run SUS in an AD enviroment afiak. You have to push the policy out from the server to the clients.

Download the SUS 1.0 ADM template from
Use the Group Policy editor to load the .adm file then, in the Group Policy Editor, go to 'Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update'. You'll see an entry for 'Specify intranet Microsoft update service location'. Enable it and point both locations to the SUS server.

Hope this helps...

thanks for the replys
the .adm template put in the entries, I pointed to my SUS server but when I run Windows Update from the Start - Programs - menu it still points out to the internet for the updates. I found an entry in the registry I also changed under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\URL.

Still points out to the internet.HELP
thanks for any suggestions.

SUS doesn't work like Windows Update. It works in the background so there is no web page to vist for updates. The only web page you can access is the administrative SUS page.

Of course, that makes it frustrating while you wait to see if the automated updates work.

ok, so it shouldn't bring up ie pointing to
but that's the problem it is still functioning like I haven't made any changes.

thanks for the explanation rgzimmer - I haven't seen one actually work yet!
