SureStore 12000e Problems

Help. I have a HP SureStore 12000e dat-2 autoloader. Whenever I try to format/erase/backup to the tape I get an error that the tape has lost its position. Then the flashing amber light comes on. If it happens while trying to do a backup, the backup job in Arcserve 9 ends in a crashed state. I don't really want to throw this out but does anyone have any ideas? I have upgraded to the latest firmware and I have also run the HP Tools. Anu suggestions would be appreciated.
