An associate of mine has a pc running Windows ME operating system. The other day her son downloaded some fonts from somewhere on the internet and ever since she cannot get her pc to boot up in anything other than in safe mode.

She is getting a new hardware discovered wizard on start up but the wizard is saying "Windows has discovered the following new hardware" and then there is a blank space where the hardware should be. I have to cancel it in order to start up, but have to cancel many many times over, then it eventually tells me that I have to instal the monitor and will also not let me instal that, after the monitor does not instal I get an error message saying "SURegCreateKey Failed".

Does anyone know what I might do to restore the pc? I have done a virus check and nothing, I am really not used to Windows ME so don't know how to do a system restore and none of the disks that came with the pc are in order.

Can anyone help?

The one time I used ME i failed.... So i havn't used it at all either. However, If i were in your shoes i would do the following steps in this order.
1) Post on Tek-tips.com
2) Search google until i'm exhasted
3) Reload ME or better yet 2k or xp
4) See if i can make the computer box bounce down a nice set of cement stairs (cement is imperitive)

Khanza, I like your style, doing your steps exactly!! I am just at the stage where I am about to re-instal and go to XP, however it would seem a shame to go and bounce it down the stairs after that! I am currently thinking it is an either/or option!

SYAR2003, we have tried System Restore and it just crashes so no joy there!

I think a complete re-instal seems to only option but if anyone has any ideas other than a re-install I would love to hear them and save me the trouble!

Thanks again!

Hi all

I have tried just about everything and was going to go for a re-instal but she has lost her Windows ME disk. I have her Time Computers system recovery disk but not sure what to do with it! I am being a bit dumb I know but I have never used these disks before, i have always found it easier to just re-instal the operating system! So if the system recovery disk does not work and I have no operating system disk as it was either OEM or she has lost the disk, any other ideas??

Any advise would be appreciated!
