I do not know the absolute limit but I have done something with 8 subreports and it worked fine. A bit slow though.
There is one limitation - a subreport cannot have its own subreport, they must all be subreports of the main report. Software Support for Sage Mas90, Macola, Crystal Reports, Goldmine and MS Office
The theoretical limit is 800 but you'd be a braver man than I am to try it. 20 Sub reports will work but it might be painfully slow, so if you can use 'on-demand' sub reports. Then as the name would suggest the data is only read when requested.
