I found out that on my Sun Solaris server in my /etc/system file that my maxphys parameter is set to 8388608. Does this sound too large to anyone? Should I be concerned? How do UNIX Admins determain the size of this parameter? Please help.

If it's in your /ets/system file, it means that someone or a software installation has seen fit to modify this parameter from the default 131072. In an ideal world changes to tunable parameters should be accompanied by some comments in /etc/system as to why they have been changed, certainly most packages that amend these values on installation will add a **Changed by xyz, **End of xyz changes line to the file. Do you have some sort of 3rd party SAN storage?

Sun documents has a fairly good manual on tunable parameters at:

You may need to browse the docs.sun.com site to find the manual that refers to your Solaris version
