sry if this is a noob question, or if its been answered repeatedly...i searched thru posts but cant find what i'm looking for and my deadline is close...

i have a book i'm formatting...there are two sections (preface & main body)...i created header on master pages and inserted auto page numbering...the page numbering should start with the 2nd section (main body) as page number 1 and it does...but i can't seem to remove or hide the page numbering for the first section (preface)...i only want page numbers to appear in second section not first...

when i click on the first section start page and goto layout>numbering & section, 'start section' is grayed out with a check and i can only choose 'auto' or 'start page numbering'...

how can i suppress the page numbers for the first section?...i am using InDesign CS 3.0.1

thanks in advance!

/joe

Ywo choices: create a separate master page for the first section, based on the second but without any page numbers, or simply select (Control-Shift or Command-Shift select the page number box on the actual page to release it from the master) and delete it. The latter may be easier if it's just a few pages.
