Hey all. I've created a doc in IDCS (Win) that requires some cutting at the printer. I've put all the cut and score lines in an additional layer, but I'm having difficulty understanding the print process -- the printer wants a PDF as well as a packaged ID file (which is fine). Should I turn off the cut/score layer when outputting to PDF? And will the printer be able to suppress the printing of the cut/score layer if he prints from the ID file? It's probably a bit of a newbie question, but I've never had to do something like this before (I usually design for straightforward print jobs with no cutting or scoring).

Oh, and should I also mark the cut/score lines on page 2 (printed on the reverse of P1) or is having them on P1 enough? Many thanks in advance :)

These are all questions that you should really ask your printer directly.

IDCS will allow you to export PDF layers of your InDesign layers but your printer will need to be using later versions of Acrobat or a similarly capable PDF system.

Normally, cut marks are done by inserting Ruler Guides (Layout menu) and giving them their own color. Then, just a note to printer says somethig like "all cuts marks shown as green ruler guides".

By default, ID does not print these nor does it include them in a pdf export, but including them is given as an option on the general part of the print dialog.

You can also draw a fine line directly on the document, select it, open the Attributes window and designate it as "non printing". Again, the General part of the print dialog give you the option to overide this, but it's off by default.

To include layers in teh pdf you have to set the export to be compatible with at least version6. Then check the part for including the layers. If you used ruler guides for your cut marks, the pdf export (comapatible with 6) gives you the option to include guides and layers. When this is opened in Acorbat 6 or higher, the Layers navigation pane gives you the option to show or hide grids and guides. The Acrobat print dialogue gives you the option to print or not print the guides.
