Thanks. That still does not explain exactly what was wrong.

Janis suggested it was related to "cabling switches, trunking etc". I would like to know exactly what that means.
 
IP Address 127.0.0.1 is the Local IP Address of an Ethernet Device. You can actually ping this address. If you set up a sun box as "Not Networked", the host table will be populated with nodename, loghost and localhost set to 127.0.0.1.

The message is telling you that there is a device on your network that is using the 127.0.0.1 address. You can use snoop to capture the Ethernet Address to help determine which device is not set up properly.
 
The FFFFFFFF is an all broadcast address, or 255.255.255.255, which is the destination in this case. 7F000001 is the loopback address, and it is arping everyone.
