I purchased a new, loaded computer upgraded for gaming and am waiting for its arrival. Someone recommended that I buy a super surge protector which regulates power such as the CyberPower 625AVR saying that with new, powerful systems, these are a must-have in case the power fluctuates or flickers. Supposedly a regular surge protector may not give the power to the system at a controlled level which could, over time, cause problems. I live in an old house with old wiring and the lights do dim sometimes. Is this just a sales pitch or should I really invest in one? [noevil]

Surge protectors help damp out surges (overvoltage spikes).

They don't do anything for undervoltages or brownouts.

An uninterruptable power supply helps with undervoltages and power outages for the duration of their battery life. (battery recharges when power comes back on)

There are some problems that a typical UPS can't resolve or respond to fast enough to give you total protection, but they are better than not having a UPS.

And if you want to spend lots of money and hurt your back there are continuous duty UPS that feed generated AC from the battery full time while the battery is recharging full time from the wall plug. No transfer time delays with this type UPS.
