how can i get the machine to boot completely..

what model system is this;

boot -s and see if it boots to single user mode which it should.

Is this system configured with a static ip address?

check /etc/hosts
check /etc/nodename

make sure the system name is the same.

check and makesure the hostname.gem0 matches hosts file entry.

Is the cable plugged in? (sorry have to ask not implying anything).

Any other info you think is pertinent please post.
