Has anyone heard a firm date on sunsetting WindowsXP? I heard the end of June, but I couldn't find anything on their website. Thanks!

Robyne-

End of June for sales and primary support, something like 3 or 4 years on limited support.

Glen's right... it's June 30th for retail sales but it's difficult to judge when OEM-installed builds are no longer going to be available. There's been discussion in web articles and blogs whether OEM's may try to stockpile Win XP licenses as it's obviously a popular choice with consumers.

My Dell guy said end June was what he heard, but that he'd keep me in the loop.

Do you know what 'primary support' encompasses? Service packs, I'm sure. But what about security patches? Thanks!

Robyne-

Primary support involves being able to pick up the phone for basic help, primarily, and patches of both security and a bug fix nature.

Extended support involves the things of primary support but are costly. Security patches are released, generally, but any other problem involves licensure and payment for the fix (Several SP1 and Windows 2000 boxes got hit for about $2000 a pop for the time zone fix last year).

Service Pack 3 RTM will be released on April 29, and will likely be the last one. So the issue of service packs will be irrelevant.

Grest, thanks for the information!

Robyne-

You can buy vista and install xp under the license, or 2k and 98 for that matter.

I expect enterprise level support via Micosoft services will extend for a long time as Vista uptake for both businesses and end users is pretty poor atm. If it wasn't for oem licensing on new machines it wouldn't have much of a user base at all.

thereavager,

Sorry but this is a common misconception. Only certain versions have downgrade rights, i.e. OEM versions of Vista Business and Vista Ultimate (not Vista Home, any version) or Select/Volume Licensing versions.

The 2 OEM versions above only have downgrade rights to Windows XP Pro (32-bit and 64-bit) and Windows Tablet PC Edition, not to Windows 2000 or earlier.

Retail versions of Vista (i.e. FPP, Full Packaged Product End User License Agreenment) have no downgrade rights (although some FPP versions do have downgrade rights if theylicenses were acquired by enrollment in Software Assurance).

Have a look at the following 2 links for more info:

Hope this helps...
