Dear all:
I am a computer hobbyist and like experimenting with PCs and server equipment essentially for the sake of it. Thus, whilst I know more than your average user, what I have "learnt" may not be exactly correct.
I have a server sitting in my house running Windows and I am planning to migrate to Linux at some point. It is an IBM X345 server with SCSI drives attached running at RAID 0 i.e. using all HDs installed as one large HD - yes I know this would be very stupid in a business setting. However the unit only cost me £10 so any loss will be frustrating rather than costly.
I have been using an XBOX360 to serve media to the TV in the lounge over wireless from aforesaid server. That said, a friend of mine has told me that I could use a thin client running a Linux distro via USB to do this task thus freeing up the XBOX to play games in another room.
It is my intention to migrate to Linux for this these types of experiemts in due course. However, I have been offered an old Sunray 1 client (for free) to experiment with for this purpose.
My question is, will I be able to run a Linux distro like MINT in this way on such a client to grab media from a wired ethernet connection on the home network or will there be issues because this is a Sun system and thus not based around other more typical client/server setups?
This is where my limited knowledge runs out. Could someone tell me what the difference is between a Sun and an IBM based system - are they totally different or are they compatible (out of interest).
Also if there is a thread that tells me all this, feel free to just point me in the direction of it.
Thanks
Graham
