Dear mates:
I'm studying a MSc in Business Information Technology, and i have an assignment on Sun store web site.

So i have some questions for guys who used/never used this website before:

1- have you ever been to sun website and surfed through their store? if yes please tell me how did you feel about it? if no why you didn't try it?
2- what are the things you like to have in Sun store web site
3- what are the things which maybe motivate Sun store site, and make it more popular?
4- do you think that Sun Microsystem are not that interested in developing their store website?
5- If you have seen an adv. in the internet talking about special discounts on Sun machines,do you think it wil encourage you to go there and have alook?

I really apreciate your help, please just mention your full name and your position in your reply so i can register it !!! guys you are going to be famous at Kingston university/London

Here is a starter for 10. Whilst I have not addressed the questions directly, I think I have covered all elements. Please feel free to ask further questions if any of this is unclear.

I have purchased some considerable kit from Sun, both direct, and through their acredited resellers. I would not consider buying Sun kit from a web site, unless I knew exactly what I wanted.

The reason for this, is that there are just too many variables on offer.

Admittedly, the kit I have bought in the past have been mid range servers (V480/v490's and the like)and therefore would want the assistance of a Sun specialist to ensure that my purchase was indeed what I needed.

Having looked at the site for the first time, I would suggest that the site is good for buying workstations, and low end servers, plus parts, as you are more likely to know what you want, and the spec of the kit is not as critical. This is particularly true if you are buying storage systems as well. We have had some problems with buying the correct kit, even when speaking with Sun reps directly, in that they did not know exactly what would work together.

Additionally, by buying though a reseller or direct from Sun, you stand a better chance of getting discount, where as a web site price is a web site price.

The last kit I bought (some 3 years ago now, was bought through a reseller, who was able to offer me ex-demonstration kit from Sun, with all the usual warranty you would get from Sun. They were able to offer a buy back on the old kit I was replacing (Ageing E6000's). They were able to offer maintenance on the kit we did not replace, and also offered us free consultancy to migrate from one platform to the new platform.

We then went back to them for further consultancy, when we moved our kit from one site to another, and also got a good deal on this, as some additional hardware was required.

I personally just feel happier considering you are spending significantly more than if you were buying a PC server, talking to someone who knows what is best for a given application.

Regards,

Andy Tait, Senior Systems Engineer.
