Hi all,

I want to know whether SUN Volume manager will work on IBM SSA array.

I am having SUN Ultra Enterprise 3000 syatem with SUN Sparc Storage array. Currently SUN SSA is configurred using SUN Volume manager on Ultra Enterprise 3000 server. Now i am replacing SUN SSA with IBM SSA 7133 T40. The reason is that SUN SSA has 30 number of 2gb hdds and the performance of these hdds are very slow. Where as IBM SSA has 36.4gb hdds and total throughput is 80 MB per second.

Now i want to configure raid 5 on IBM SSA. Whether current sun volume manager software will work on this. Some told me that if os detects the IBM SSA harddisks then on the same host (Enterprise 3000) sun volume manager will work without any problem. Again some people say that license number of volume manager related to eeprom of SUN SSA.

So, please let me know whether i can use SUN Volume manager software on IBM SSA.

Thanks and Regards

Pavikumar

Not 100% sure on this, but I seem to believe that Sun VM is basically Veritas VxVM in disguise. If so then I also believe that you will need an SSA license and a RAID 5 license to use the two in conjunction. (Depending on version I beleive that the SSA option is standard in later versions of Veritas VxVM, you could try their website at In VxVM I can check my licenses through a "vxlicense -p" command.
