Hi

I'm currently involved in a project where it's been suggested that a couple of Sun v880s should be replaced with windoze boxes. These servers cost big bucks a couple of years ago & something only about 1/6th of the cost is being proposed as a replacement now.

I know that hardware prices come down but I'm not so sure that this is really neccessary - can anyone confirm what sort of wintel equivalent a v880 with 4 x 1200 ultrasparc IIIi processors would be (8Gb RAM & Solaris 9, running Oracle 9i if it matters)

TIA

Steve

That is right, resell value is typically 1/6th of the original price after 2 years of service. This is standard in the hardware industry.

I would question the person that is suggesting wintel for replacements as to why the dramatic change.

Thank Comtec17

I'm really after some kind of comparison as well (dare I say here that I'm not a unix man) as I really have no idea whether an 1200Mhz Ultrasparc IIIi is the equivilant of a similar speed Pentium III or a 3Ghz Xeon.

The box that'll replace it will have quad 3Ghz Xeon processors & I'm not convinced that it'll actually be any quicker.

Thanks

Steve

Well you can not just go off clock speeds when comparing Sparc's to PC's. The other main difference between the two processors is one is RISC vs CISC.

I'd realised that coffeysm, hence my question.

Looks like I've averted the swapout now anyway as I wasn't the only one with big reservations re this!

Thanks

Steve
