Hi,

I'd like to get Unix Certified, but I'm not sure
if taking the AIX Sys Admin certification is enough
to not have to be Solaris certified?

Also, when we talk about the 3 types of shells (korn, C,
& bourne) or when we talk about C/C++ scripting in a Unix environment, which Unix are we referring to?
Is it Sun or IBM? Or no difference since it's all Unix?

Then there's Linux. Which fits with Linux?
And if being certified with AIX is enough for me to
work w/ Linux?

Hmm, I must be either asking stupid questions or
just thinking too hard. Can someone at least enlighten
me?

Thanks much,
abctips.

Regarding AIX vs Sun certification: There are an awful lot of jobs out there that require Sun experience, so if you have both AIX and Sun experience, I would try to get both certifications.

Regarding the shells: Off the top of my head I can't think of any major differences in the shells from one OS to the other. One OS may have a different version of the shell, which would cause some differences. You might want to take a look at Unix in a Nutshell for more info about shells.

Regarding the compilers: There are some differences in the C and C++ compilers between the OS's, but I'm not sure what they are. I do know that the environment settings for the libraries are expressed differently.

Regarding Linux: AIX 5L was designed to work seamlessly with Linux, I am told. I haven't worked with it though. If you have enough experience with AIX or Sun, I would think that working with Linux wouldn't be that difficult. There will be a difference in the names of the commands you use, but there already is a difference in the name between Sun and AIX.

You might want to take a look at this URL, to see a comparison of the various command names for the various Unix flavors:
YOu also might want to look at the O'Reilly book Essential System Administration. When the author mentions a command, he usually gives the name of the command for other Unix flavors and discusses any differences.

I don't know if your aware of this but their is a UNIX certification and testing forum on tek-tips
