Help needed urgently;

Brief background: We are using SUN PC Netlink running on Solaris 8 (Sparc); with couple of virtual NT servers.

From NT side, event logs defaults to recycle (over-write existing records) after a set period of time. However, we would like to maintain an archive of all event-logs in one location in the Unix file system for at least 52 weeks.
Now to my question: For fear of running out of space on the file system, we want to tar/move event-log files periodically to an archive location. But the problem is I can't find the default location of the event log files or could be that I just don't know what SUN calls it here. Do anyone has an idea where the logs are located & what it is called in the Unix file system.

Thanks.

Hi bkonline,

Can't help you out, dunno much about netlink...running samba here.

I want to set up a complete anonymous netlink server for testing it out versus samba, our SUN support guy here knows as much about it as I do...
"Read Manual - Trial & Error" sort-off..

So, could you post how one would set up a netlink anonym- access ?

Thanks,

Igaduma

Hi Igaduma,
I am not sure if we are on the same page here.
I was talking of "PC Netlink" which is a SUN add-on module
that enables Windows clients to access resources on a Unix
box just as they do on an NT Server. If that is what you are looking for your testing, then it is a free download from SUN's
site at the link below:
Installation/configuration instructions are included as
well, otherwise provide your email address for a copy to be
delivered to your inbox.

However, you MUST have a Sparc hardware (which is SUN's
proprietary machine) to take advantage of this seamless
connectivity. But it worth it considering the cost of
having several Intel servers for various roles that you can
consolidate on one Sparc machine running Solaris. That's
both (NT & Solaris) running their respective
applications/services concurrently. To users it appears and
feels like regular NT server.

goodluck.

Hi,

Yeaup, that is the application.
but I wonder if there is any speed improvement when using the file-sharing part versus filesharing on samba.

Samba doesn't do XP file-locking (haven't had a problem...yet..) but this seems no problem under netlink, or so I have been told.

I just don't have the time to read the manual on how to actually share a directory, to anonymous users (thus not linking to a pdc and having everything mapped to 1 username)
But, i'll check it out..thanks,

Igaduma

When talking of "anonymous access" to network resources via PC Netlink, it is just like any other NT server configuration. For that you can set up a generic account (like NT's default "Guest" user) for ALL your anonymous clients and assign it a generic passwd or NONE at all to make it true open.
But you have to make sure that you can afford the consequences of the security risk involved with such "anonymous account".

So the answer to your question on the possibility of acomplishing a task using PC-Netlink, such as mapping network resources using anonymous user account, will depend on NT's own's capabilities. As SUN kind of cloned NT's functionality and just added a few of its own.

Hope I have been of help with these.
goodluck.
