I have 2 machines and can anyone help me establish which is the better machine?

Maybe by pointing me to a good web page?

I have available a
Sun Ultra 5/10 with
1 UltraSparc IIi processor running at 440Mhz

compared with a

Sun Enterprise E220R with
1 UltraSparc II processor running at 450Mhz

Memory is same in both and there are no other
significant differences.

Any advice appreciated - not sure if this was correct forum!

The SUN Ultra 5/10 is a workstation not meant for Server class machine even though it can be.

The E220R is an Enterprise server which could hold more memory, multiple CPU's, multiple hard drives, dual power supplies, etc...

>> multiple hard drives
yes, two ;)

but I agree with comtec17, E220R is a server U10 is a "Workstation" (or a PC with a Sun label in my eyes)

I dont know the specs on UltraSparc II processors but in the UltraSparc III the III has 8 Mb cache and the IIIi has 1Mb. You will probably find the same sort of thing with the UltraSparc II.

thanks for the information...
E220R seems the better option..

Actually, the 450MHz UltraSparc-II in the E220R has 4MB of cache, while the 440MHz UltraSparc-IIi in the U5/U10 only has 2MB of cache. In addition, the E220R is probably a better all-around machine for reasons mentioned above. (also, it uses SCSI disks, while the U5/U10 has a really slow IDE controller for the drives, though nothing stops you from installing a SCSI card)

However, the E220R is technically an Ultra 60 workstation in a rackmount case. (so the workstation vs. server argument is invalid) Only real difference is that it supports redundant power supplies, and I think has some sort of monitoring/alarms card. (though the U60 is still a MUCH better machine than the U5/U10)
