Greetings,
My cstmr. bought a Sum7i & they indicated that there's supposed to be daugher boards in Slot 1 - Slot 3.

Does anyone know what's supposed to be there? Any help would be appreiciated.

Here's the "sh ver" command output.. .

This is not a modular switch however, I cannot add or remove blades (maybe if I completely disassembled the switch but that is not the manufacturers intent). I guess my next question is, are there ports (fiber or copper depending on which type of 7i you have) available to plug into?? Where did the switch come from??

Greetings Comstocb ,
You’ve just opened the proverbial can-of-worms.

Here’s the situation: I work for a VAR & I’m the ExrNet presale/ postsale engineer for Extreme Networks. In my lab, I have; Sum24, Alpine 3808 & BlkDmnd 6808 & I’m familiar w/the innards of each.

We have a customer who buys Sum7i switches & we’ve had some problems in the past. To ensure that their recently purchased switch was up to par, I tested it before the device shipped (sent data throught each I/O port & confirmed that the P/S + RP/S were okay).

I issued RMA for the Sum7i yesterday because my customer told me that the slots are supposed to have daughterboards in Slot 1 - Slot 3 & these daughterboards should be acknowledged in Sh Ver command output. As you know, the switch has a fixed configuraiton so there’s no FRUs or end-user hardware upgrade options. Any idea what the daughter boards do?

Here’s another possible issue “ Packet memory defect info for card 1”. .

Even though there is no way to add/move/change slot cards, I bet that internally, it has a backplan and 3 cards that fill out the avaliable ports on the switch. It is interesting that the switch does not show the slots populated. It must be a problem within the switch. Does the switch function for the customer? My next move would be to call 1-888-257-3000 and ask them what is going on with the failure to report what is located in each slot.
