SUM Function just doesn't work!!! 1

Hey.

I'm now Access/VBA expert, but I know how to use the SUM function in its basic form, but for the love of God I cannot get it to work on this report.

I have spent hours working on it.

I have a blank report, with one field in the detail section. This field is a number of three digits. I need a total to be displayed in the footer, so I have

 =Sum([

fieldname

])

. For some reason this doesn't work!!!
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME BEFORE I THROW THE MACHINE OUT OF THE WINDOW!!!

Go to View -> Sorting and Grouping in the report designer and add a group on the field.
Then, move the sum field from the page footer to the group footer.

That should fix the problem.

I've spent bloody ages, I've looked online, searched the help an just been throtting the machine for the last few hours - it simply isn't in the help!!!
