Hi,

I am researching into the possibility of setting up a free email forwarding service and would very much appreciate any advice on how suitable Postfix would be. In particular, is anyone already doing something similar?

My service, AgreedMail, will allow people to sign up to receive emails from participating websites without revealing their address to the site owners.

When the user wants to sign up to receive news from a particular site, the site forwards them to a form on the AgreedMail site. There, the user enters their email address and whatever info the original site requires. This info is then returned to the site owner with the exception of the email address for which my server substitures a special user_number@agreedmail.org address.

The site owner sends emails to that agreedmail.org address and they are forwarded to the correct address with a footer appended reminding the user that he has agreed to receive emails from this sender and that, if he wishes to stop receiving mails from a particular sender, he can simply sign into AgreedMail.org (using his email address and password), look at the list of senders he has agreed to receive emails from and untick those he wishes to stop.

The agreedmail server will only accept email from participating sites and blackhole everything else, making it relatively easy to shut out abusers. The hope is that agreedmail will gain sufficient momentum, credibility and trust to be white-listed by the major spam blocks etc, meaning that users can more reliably receive, say, membership verification emails or frequent forum notifications. The advantage for the participating sites is that they will spend less time dealing with users not receiving emails due to spam filters etc. They will also find it easier to build up a userbase as users will find it reassuring to know that signing up won't result in spam.

So, does this sound like something I will be able to set-up with Postfix? If everyone thinks it is I will use Kyle Dent's O'Reilly book to help me do it but, right now, I'd appreciate any and all advice on the broad suitability of Postfix for this project.

Thanks,

Donnacha
