Not sure yet that I'll be able to bag a new laptop, but I am going ahead and looking around.

So in my looking, I thought I'd ask around here, see if anyone here knows of any particular laptops which support 2 SATA hard drives. I see the mSata drives, and not sure whether it'd be worth going with mSata for one, or just finding a laptop that supports 2 sata drives.

I'd like to possibly do one SSD for the system, and then one standard drive for data. I may still not go this route, but wanted to get some opinions. Anyone here worked on or owned such a laptop recently (past couple years I guess)?

I'm particularly wanting to go Core i7 or perhaps i5.

Thanks for any references/suggestions.

Pretty sure HP has a dual SATA drive laptop & from what I read a combo SATA & SSD can be achived, will see if I can find the link

One other thing, you can hot swap hard drives with optical drives on about any newer laptop as there are adapters to facilitate this, kind of a cool idea.

Sager is a nice brand with lots of options, including 3 hdd's and an optical in the same laptop. They are manufactured by Clevo, the same company that makes Alienware laptops. Or did before Dell bought them. I used to own a Clevo laptop a few years ago, that had 2 hard drives, 2 optical drives,a TV tuner, and a full desktop cpu. It was big, heavy, ran hot, had a nvidia graphics card, and the battery life blew chunks, but it was fast. Because it had a full size keyboard, I used to use it at LAN parties for FPS games.

I think the Sony Vaio VGN-AR Series has dual SATA, but I also definitely know that the ASUS G51J 3D does... ;-)

and XIT probably meant something along these lines:

Thanks for all the suggestions. Some good information for sure. I didn't think about Sager laptops, b/c from what I'd seen of them, it seemed all their laptops were $2,500+ which will be out of my budget range for any time in the near future. I don't know for sure what my range will be, but I'm hoping I'll be able to go as high as somewhere in the range of $1,200 to $1,500 IF I need to. We'll see.

Worst case scenario, I just get a new/used motherboard for the XPS M1530, and pray it lasts a while yet. I've not counted it out for certain, but I sure hope I can. [smile]

And yeah, I knew it was possible with some laptops to swap out a hard drive for an optical drive, but I didn't know it was quite so available as with the linked adapter, just never noticed it. [smile]
