I don't really remember what i did other than going to LinuxConf and unchecking the option "Activate PPP interface at bootup" as i didn't want the modem to dial-up everytime i boot(it dials but never connects proper) making the bootup slower.

Then later when i wanted to surf the Internet i realised that the modem dialed, connected proper, but there was no modem activity whatsoever(LEDs never flashed)!

Using Netscape, i configured the proxy manually but when i okayed it, netscape sortof jams on me & later gave me an error msg: "Cannot detect proxy"(Had to xkill it). Xchat yielded nothing to modem activity too, so did other programs. All of these worked fine last time.

So anyone got experience with this problem please drop me a message. Thanks!

Does your ISP require a proxy? If not, disable that.
If you can dial and connect, you won't get any activity until you try and access something, open the browser or email, something.
If you can't surf anywhere, you'll have to check DNS settings (get them from your ISP). Cheers,
Jim

Thanks Comtech:

Yes, my isp requires a proxy to access non-local sites.
DNS was set up fine.

Anyway, i found that the problem came about in LinuxConf, under PPP/SLIP tab, i deleted the ppp0 entry. When i readded a ppp0 entry and reconnected, everything works fine.

Is that a *required* setting?

Yes, if you're using PPP, then you MUST have a 0 entry as the first (in this case only) connection to use. If you want multiple connections, they would be PPP1, PPP2 and so on, remembering that computers use 0 as the first of everything. (boot HD, first partition is HDA0) Cheers,
Jim
