suddenly no playback at all

my xp suffered a corrupted system-hive, and i had to manually return the system to a previous state by replacing all the hives with older ones. after this operation premiere cannot play back anything! projects open normally and the material is clearly there since one can view it by dragging the timeline. but behold: once you press play, the timeline jumps to the beginning and freezes. this also applies to playback in the source monitor. i have re-installed premiere but the problem remains. any ideas?
