I was doing some system clean-up (internet files, etc.) and I set my PC to defrag. As it worked, I sat across the room and watched TV. All was going along nicely until, suddenly, I heard the sound, the pop, of the monitor shutting down, and I looked over to see that the screen was blank and the power light had gone from green to yellow. I also heard no CPU noise. The CPU had suddenly stopped running. I tried to start it again, but nothing happened. I checked the power and other cables, the surge protector and power strip. All in order. I opened the box and replaced the battery, but still have nothing. Could it be my power unit died? Is there a way to check it? The computer is only about 2 years old and is used at home; it gets a reasonable amount of use. How do I begin to fix this one?

hmm, definitely sounds like a short somewhere, most likely in your psu, however you've got a surg protector there...

first try to see if your psu is working or not, if that works, then test your mobo, those 2 are the most likely candidates...

you'll have to open your computer up and pull out the parts to be able to check them...

In these circumstances I would agree with Crowley on this one and say 70% power supply even more likely if your PSU is a cheaper generic type supplied with the case (just hope the power surge caused when a PSU goes hasn't damaged anything else.

Thanks for replying. I am looking into replacing the psu..it was probably not top quality. Any recommendations about what type to use? The current one is 300w and I am running a p4 with two hard drives and all the typical peripherals. Would you recommend a more powerful one?

*Definitely PSU*. If it was mobo then you'd still have some drives coming on I think.

Suggestion, like everyone else pointed out PSU, as a replacement get yourself an Enermax with at least 400w...

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...
